Accessing Deverbal Nouns in L1 and L2 Arabic: A Masked-Priming Experiment

چکیده

The current study examines how non-native speakers process deverbal nouns of Arabic. Unlike Indo-European languages, the word-formation in Arabic occurs a discontinuous manner. root morpheme (carrying core semantic information) interlocks word pattern (which holds phonological and morpho-syntactic information). Research on shows that native decompose derived inflected (deverbal verbs) complex words during lexical processing. Priming studies processing did not appear to have consistent findings whether L2 or fully list forms; Using masked-priming experiment, this examined words, particularly, real-time. We tested group L1 Turkish /L2 learners six experimental conditions which relationship between prime target is either morphological, orthographic, semantic. results indicated priming effects morphological for speakers, but speakers. This into their patterns morphemes whereas them as whole forms online These support claim use different strategies real-time words.

Morphologically complex words in L1 and L2 processing: Evidence from masked priming experiments in English

This paper reports results from masked priming experiments investigating regular past-tense forms and deadjectival nominalizations with -ness and -ity in adult native (L1) speakers of English and in different groups of advanced adult second language (L2) learners of English. While the L1 group showed efficient priming for both inflected and derived word forms, the L2 learners demonstrated repet...

Deverbal Nouns in Knowledge Representation

Deverbal nouns pose serious challenges for knowledgerepresentation systems. We present a method of canonicalizing deverbal noun representations, relying on a rich lexicon of verb subcategorization frames, the WordNet database, a large finite-state network for derivational morphology, and a series of heuristics for mapping deverbal arguments onto the arguments of corresponding verbs.

A Principled Account of Malagasy Deverbal Nouns

However, there is a problem with such an analysis in that there is a regular paradigmatic gap in the distribution of f-. Malagasy verbs have three forms, here referred to as Actor Topic (AT), Circumstantial Topic (CT), and Theme Topic (TT); the form of the verb determines which argument in the clause appears in the sentence-final subject position. Of the three forms, AT and CT freely accept f-n...

Deverbal Nouns in Czech Light Verb Constructions

In this paper, we provide a well-founded description of Czech deverbal nouns in both nominal and verbal structures (light verb constructions), based on a complex interaction between the lexicon and the grammar. We show that light verb constructions result from a regular syntactic operation. We introduce two interlinked valency lexicons, NomVallex and VALLEX , demonstrating how to minimize the s...
